Everyday Mathematics:
Moving from Memorizing to Understanding and Applying Mathematical Knowledge

by Susan Townsend

Marshall Public Schools initiated an Everyday Math pilot program during the 2006-07 school year. Due to the success of the students in the pilot, the District purchased the program for all students in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. The K-5th grade teachers were trained during the summer on how to use this program. The funding for the pilot materials and the subsequent training were made available by a grant received from the Cronin Foundation.

Everyday Mathematics is a research based curriculum developed by the University of Chicago in 1983 and has been revised several times since its beginning. Achieving mathematical literacy is a national and state priority. Everyday Mathematics is aligned with the State of Michigan Curriculum Frameworks and Grade Level Content Expectations, and focuses on the following strands:
  • Algebra and Uses of Variables
  • Data and Chance
  • Geometry and Spatial Sense
  • Measures and Measurement
  • Numeration and Order
  • Patterns, Functions, and Sequences
  • Operations
  • Reference Frames
Everyday Math is also structured to provide students with multiple exposures to topics and frequent opportunities to practice skills and concepts. Everyday Math focuses on the following:
  • Real-life Problem Solving emphasizing the application of mathematics to real world situations
  • Balanced Instruction including whole group instruction as well as small group, partner, or individual activities
  • Multiple Methods for Basic Skills Practice and Review
  • Emphasis on Communication: Students are encouraged to explain (verbally and in written form) and discuss their mathematical thinking, in their own words.
  • Enhanced Home/School Partnerships: Home Links and Study Links are provided for families and students to participate in the student's math learning. Periodic letters are sent home to help keep parents informed about their children's experience with Everyday Mathematics.
  • Appropriate Use of Technology: Many activities are extended and enhanced with the use of calculators.
Marshall Public Schools is very excited to have the opportunity to provide the Everyday Math Program in support of the implementation of our math curriculum. We are excited about the opportunities our children will have as they learn more easily and in more depth, the required mathematic objectives.
